Why People Wait — and Why You Shouldn’t

Most people with unfiled years aren’t hiding — they’re overwhelmed. A missing W-2, a bad year, a move. Then the fear of “how bad is it?” keeps them frozen while penalties quietly grow.

Here’s what actually happens when you come in: we pull your IRS transcripts to see exactly what the IRS already knows, rebuild each year from those records, and file. Many clients discover they were owed refunds for some years. For balances owed, the IRS offers payment plans — and being current and compliant is what unlocks them.

Everything is confidential, bilingual, and handled at our Forest Lane office. The hardest part is walking in the door. After that, it’s just paperwork — and paperwork is our job.

Back Taxes & ITIN — Frequently Asked Questions

The questions people are often afraid to ask — answered honestly.

I haven’t filed in years. Am I in trouble?
Less than you fear, if you act. The IRS generally wants the last six years filed to consider you compliant, and voluntarily catching up is viewed far more favorably than waiting to be contacted. If refunds were owed to you, you can still claim them for up to three years. The worst strategy is continuing to wait — penalties on unpaid balances grow monthly.
What if I can’t afford to pay what I owe?
File anyway — the failure-to-file penalty is much larger than the failure-to-pay penalty. Once you’re current, the IRS offers installment agreements most taxpayers qualify for, and in genuine hardship cases an Offer in Compromise can settle for less. We’ll help you pick the right option for your numbers.
What is an ITIN and who needs one?
An ITIN (Individual Taxpayer Identification Number) lets people who aren’t eligible for a Social Security number file taxes and be claimed as dependents. Filing with an ITIN builds a documented tax history, and it’s required to claim certain credits. We prepare the W-7 application and the tax return it attaches to, in English or Spanish — $195.
My ITIN expired. Can I still file?
You should renew it first — filing with an expired ITIN delays refunds and can cost you credits. ITINs expire after three consecutive years of non-use. We handle renewals the same way as new applications, and can prepare your return at the same time so everything goes in together.
I got a letter from the IRS. What do I do?
Don’t ignore it, and don’t panic — most letters are automated and resolvable. Bring or WhatsApp us a photo of the letter. We’ll explain what it actually says, what deadline applies, and respond correctly. Quick, accurate responses close most notices without escalation.
I lost my W-2s from past years. Can I still file those returns?
Yes. The IRS keeps wage and income transcripts showing every W-2 and 1099 ever reported under your number. We pull those records and rebuild your returns from them — no shoebox required.
Will filing back taxes affect my immigration case?
A documented history of filing and paying taxes is generally viewed as evidence of good moral character in many immigration processes, and attorneys frequently request tax records. We prepare accurate returns and can provide copies for your attorney — and our certified translation service is USCIS-accepted if you need supporting documents translated.
